Emmy Award-winning sportscaster Brian Custer joined ESPN in July of 2021 as an anchor for the network’s signature news and information program SportsCenter and a play-by-play commentator for college football and basketball.
Custer started his broadcasting career in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, as a news and sports reporter for the local ABC-TV affiliate. He later worked in Dallas as a news and sports reporter before moving to New York as a host at SNY-TV. He won two Emmy Awards while at SNY-TV.
He joined ESPN from Fox Sports, where he had called college football, college basketball and boxing since 2014. He also has been co-host of a program on SiriusXM NBA Radio. In addition to his ESPN duties, Custer is host for Showtime Championship Boxing and host of The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer available on Showtime Sports YouTube channel.
When Custer is not working, he enjoys hobbies such as golfing, fitness training, bootcamp workouts, boxing, and martial arts (he holds a 2nd degree blackbelt in taekwondo). He also has a keen eye for fashion with his distinct love for picking out patterns for his custom-tailored suits and finding the right tie to complement his ensemble. This renaissance man is an avid watch collector, sneakerhead and car enthusiast.
Custer holds a degree in broadcast journalism from Hampton University. A cancer survivor, he is a spokesman for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
After his annual health checkup in July of 2013, Brian was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Prostate Cancer, and three weeks later had emergency surgery called robotic prostatectomy. Two years later he underwent 38 bouts of high-grade radiation and is now cancer free.
His goal is to get men, especially Black men to go to the doctor annually to get checked because Black men are twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than White men. Secondly, he wants to help stop the stigma of prostate issues and inform men that it's not “an old man's disease” anymore. Brian shares his journey through motivational speeches, community outreach and health related programming and partnerships.
